Canine Vaccines

Protect your dog from disease by keeping their vaccines current.

Rabies

Rabies is transmitted by the rabies virus, which enters the body through a break in the skin, after a bite from an infected animal. It is almost always fatal. Rabies is contagious to all mammals, including humans. It is a very serious disease and should never be taken lightly. That's why there is so much emphasis on rabies vaccinations. The law requires dogs to be current on rabies vaccination.

DHPP

Distemper

A highly contagious disease caused by a virus. It is spread among dogs by contact through the mouth or nose. The virus can attack all parts of the body, including the nervous system. Can cause vomiting, diarrhea, pneumonia and nerve damage. It is usually fatal.

Hepatitis

A viral infection of the liver that can be one cause of liver disease. It is specific to the canine family, that means that this particular virus is not contagious to humans. Canine hepatitis virus is also referred to as adenovirus type 1. Hepatitis is transmitted when dogs ingest the virus in contaminated water. It may be fatal.

Parvo

A viral infection of the dogs intestinal tract. Parvo causes severe vomiting and diarrhea and the diarrhea is usually bloody with a very foul odor. It is transmitted by viral particles (found in feces) that are inhaled through the nose or mouth. It is often fatal.

Parainfluenza

A virus that is one cause of upper respiratory disease.

Bordetella - Kennel Cough

An infection caused by the Bordetella bacterium and the parainfluenza virus. The disease, also known as infectious tracheobronchitis, is characterized by a continual honking bronchial cough. It is transmitted when an infected dog coughs and infective particles are inhaled by other dogs. As the name implies, it can be easily transmitted in a kennel where many dogs are present.

Leptospirosis

This is a very serious bacterial disease infecting the kidneys and/or liver. It is shed in the urine of domestic and wild animals and spread through water contaminated with infected urine.  The bacteria penetrate mucous membranes or abraded skin and multiply rapidly upon entering the blood system. It is more common in rural areas and is marked by a high fever and yellow or icteric-colored gums. It can cause permanent kidney damage and can be fatal if untreated. The infection can be spread to humans.

Ticks cause Lyme Disease | Image source: Bigstock ©cobretLyme Disease

A disease that infects the musculoskeletal system, heart, and kidneys. It is transmitted by ticks. This vaccine is recommended if your dog is exposed to ticks.

Rattlesnake

This vaccine decreases reactions to rattlesnake venom, and may help to save your dog in the event the bite is not witnessed.  In the case of a known bite, it should still be treated as an emergency, as the protection can be overwhelmed by the amount or location of the venom, and snake bite wounds often become infected.
